Uganda Prayer Update #2 (sent 1/27/08)

Hello!

After what felt like many days of travel, we have all arrived safely here in Uganda! The three other new interns and I arrived in London after a red-eye from Denver around 10am on Tuesday and met up with a long term volunteer named Christoff that will be here in Kampala with us for 4 months. We then got to see some of the sights of London on a lovely sunny day. After another red-eye flight, we arrived in Entebbe, Uganda on Wednesday morning and thankfully so did all our luggage! It was nice to see everyone at eMi again (I had met most of the people here on my previous trip) and settle into our rooms. We have been going through more orientation, getting to know Ugandan culture, our office, our coworkers, and Kampala, as well as getting over jet lag. Yesterday we went white water rafting down the Nile... it was a truly thrilling experience! When we were on the bus on the way back from rafting, we passed by many villages. We were at least some kind of spectacle for the average Ugandan as a bus full of Mzungus (white people). The children would yell and wave at us or be too busy playing football (soccer) to notice and the adults would mostly just give a blank stare. It made me wonder what they were thinking of us, spending money on a thrill while most of them only have enough to take care of daily needs.
